Austro-Hungarian Empire

Some periods whisper. This one wore a sash. At its height, the Dual Monarchy stitched together Vienna's imperial polish and Budapest's fire into a single, sprawling household of eleven nations, a dozen languages, and more titles than any one archduke knew what to do with. Franz Joseph sat at the centre of it for sixty-eight years, long enough to outlast fashions, wars, and most of his own family, while Vienna became the workshop of the modern world: Klimt gilding his canvases next door to Freud unpicking the mind, waltzes spilling out of ballrooms built for exactly this kind of excess.

This is the empire that gave us the Secession. Gold leaf as rebellion. Ornament as argument. Craftsmen who treated a brooch the way an architect treats a façade, because in this world, jewellery wasn't an accessory. It was a declaration of who you were, who your family had been, and who you intended to marry.

Then a single gunshot in Sarajevo in 1914 pulled every thread at once, and four years of war (WWI) finished what a century of competing nationalisms had already started. By 1918 it was all over, two capitals, one empire, gone forever. All we have left is the jewellery.
