A 1940s sterling silver pendant depicting the Gemini twins as two angular, carved figures standing closely entwined. The bare-chested figures are rendered in a bold, sculptural manner, with their arms around one another’s shoulders and their remaining arms brought forward in a gesture of holding. The strongly faceted forms and stylised anatomy lend the pendant a distinctly Art Deco character, with a dramatic, almost Tamara de Lempicka-esque quality. The piece is marked with the head of Minerva, the French hallmark for Sterling silver and bears and maker's mark.

The 1940s were a decade of contradiction. War brought austerity and scarcity, yet jewellery remained a form of escape. With platinum largely reserved for the war effort, yellow gold became the defining metal, worked into bold, sculptural forms with sweeping curves, geometric lines and generous proportions.

The decade saw the rise of the distinctive Retro style, with jewellery designed to feel substantial and optimistic. Coloured gemstones and diamonds were often set against warm gold, while motifs drew inspiration from architecture, machinery and the natural world.

As the war ended, jewellery began to reflect a renewed appetite for glamour. The 1940s remain defined by their sense of strength, ingenuity and unmistakable sculptural character.
