An angular tank ring in the form of a sharp inwardly facing chevron, centred with a horizontal marquise shape cluster, set with rose cut diamonds in silver grain settings. The contrast of the subtle twinkle of the antique diamond cut alongside the modern polished surface surrounding it, displays the merging of the old and new worlds colliding in the 1940s.

Forties

The 1940s were a decade of contradiction. War brought austerity and scarcity, yet jewellery remained a form of escape. With platinum largely reserved for the war effort, yellow gold became the defining metal, worked into bold, sculptural forms with sweeping curves, geometric lines and generous proportions.

The decade saw the rise of the distinctive Retro style, with jewellery designed to feel substantial and optimistic. Coloured gemstones and diamonds were often set against warm gold, while motifs drew inspiration from architecture, machinery and the natural world.

As the war ended, jewellery began to reflect a renewed appetite for glamour. The 1940s remain defined by their sense of strength, ingenuity and unmistakable sculptural character.
