There is nothing like impending doom to bring out the party animal in all of us. Rewind to 1999: Prince’s 1982 hit really did predict the future. With uncertainty surrounding a computer glitch that could have ended the digital age, somehow this reality lowered inhibitions and spurred a “live every day like it’s your last” attitude. As the clock ticked down to the year 2000, bright colours emerged, frosty lip glosses, low-rise jeans (eeek), and Spice Girl platform shoes.

This era of uncertainty leaned into futurism, with metallic and shiny hues reflecting the aesthetic. Silver, white gold, and platinum were the metals of choice. Chokers made of plastic, velvet, and other materials walked the red carpets, adorning the world’s biggest pop icons. Meanwhile, hoop earrings, friendship rings, and charm bracelets shone on every fashionista.
